Data Visualization – Insights or Just Pictures

Numbers are what storytellers rely on in the world we live in today, they just want you to give them a clear and convincing voice. Visualizations act as a campfire around which we gather to hear the tales of these numbers!

What is Data Visualization?

Data Visualization is the presentation of data in a pictorial or graphical format which helps us understand the significance of data and get insights to take correct decision.
Data Visualization

Why Data Visualization?

Decision making requires data comprehension and at times it’s difficult to analyses the enormous data numbers. Data Visualization provides an easy way to convey concepts and identify areas that need attention and any new pattern depicted by the data.
Depending on the data variables, various charts are formed:

  • One Variable: Pie Chart
  • Two Variables: Line, Bar/Column, Histogram, Scatterplot, Box Plot
  • Three Variables: Bubble

Data Visualization

Questions to ask for Data Visualization?

  • What does the graph depict?
  • Have you selected the appropriate graph type for the data you are displaying?
  • Have you identified what variables should come on the x-axis or on y-axis?
  • Have you labelled the axes correctly and specified the units of measurement?
  • Does your graph have the proper scale (the appropriate high and low values on the axes)?
  • Is your data plotted correctly and clearly?

Once the data has been depicted using Data Visualization, the next steps include:

  • Absorbing information in new and constructive ways
  • Visualize relationships and patterns
  • Identify and act on emerging trends
  • Manipulate and interact directly with data
  • Foster a new business language
